9 Ways to sleep better at night

Insomnia is a rising condition around the world, especially with the corresponding rise of electronic devices. Sleep is an essential need for both physical and mental health, and a lack of sleep can be very damaging in both areas.

However, there are several surprisingly simple methods which can help one sleep better at night. These are nine simplistic ways to improve sleep.

Be sure to eat plenty of poultry meat, such as turkey or chicken. These meats are rich in tryptophan, an amino acid that is necessary in the production of serotonin and melatonin, which are the hormones responsible for sleep.

Tea is an excellent way to help induce sleep for several reasons. Psychologically, the act of sipping a cup of tea is very relaxing to the brain. Additionally, chamomile, valerian, lavender, and peppermint teas all have the ability to induce sleep.

Always sleep in complete darkness, since exposure to light hinders one’s ability to completely fall asleep. People who sleep with nightlights usually still feel tired after sleeping. Therefore, be sure to turn out all lights and close all windows before sleeping.

Keep the bedroom cold, either by turning on the air conditioner or using a fan to cool the room’s temperature. It is much better to sleep under a blanket in a cold room than to sleep bare in a warm room. Additionally, sleeping in a cold room can help one lose weight, since the body burns through fat when sleeping to help maintain internal body temperature.

Psychologically, the color blue is very peaceful and soothing to the mind. Therefore, paint the bedroom walls blue to help induce sleep at night.

Eating whole grains can help induce sleep, since foods like multigrain bread and brown rice help boost levels of serotonin and melatonin. However, since these grains take a long time for the body to digest, it is recommended that they are eaten at lunch instead of dinner.

Eat light dinners, or simply eat less food for dinner. Eating too much food at night can cause the body to stay awake in order to digest all of it. Additionally, finishing dinner by about seven o’clock will usually give the body enough time to digest it all before sleeping.

Be sure to refrain from working out too late into the night. Exercise causes the release of serotonin, which energizes the body and prevents brain activity from winding down.

Refrain from eating too much chocolate at night, especially dark chocolate. Chocolate is rich in caffeine, which causes the body to stay awake.
