Saharia: Assam’s crime-free model village
In an age of rising crime and social unrest, one village in central Assam stands as a beacon of peace and discipline.
Saharia, located in the Dhing area of Nagaon district, has remained crime-free for decades.
Not a single police case, no thefts, assaults, or drug crimes, has ever been registered.
The village, once a forest, began with just four families. Today, it has over 250 households.
Despite the growth, Saharia maintains a perfect record. All disputes are resolved internally, through dialogue and mediation by elders.
The Saharia Gaon Unnayan Samiti, Gaon Rakshi Bahini (Village Defence Party), and women’s groups play key roles in maintaining order.
Their close community monitoring ensures peaceful coexistence.
According to Sunil Mahela, head of the development committee, Saharia was built on cultural traditions, religious values, and education.
These roots helped shape a society that prioritises harmony over conflict. Even minor issues rarely reach the police.
The Dhing police station, though nearby, has never recorded a criminal complaint from Saharia. The police say that the village is unique.
The villagers have also taken strong steps to prevent drug abuse. Youths engage in education, cultural activities, and sports, keeping them away from harmful influences.
Community involvement is high, and everyone takes responsibility for maintaining peace.
Education is another pillar of Saharia’s success. The village hosts several schools, including a tribal girls’ school and a high school.
Dhing College, just 2.5 km away, supports higher studies. A resident recently earned a PhD, symbolising the village’s academic growth.
Agriculture sustains most families, but music, dance, and traditional sports enrich daily life.
The community is self-reliant and proud of its heritage. Despite limited government jobs, they thrive through cooperation and mutual respect.
Saharia proves that a crime-free society is not a dream; it is a lived reality. With community vigilance, cultural strength, and education, this village has created a model for the rest of India.
More than peace, Saharia represents a priceless way of life, something money can’t buy, not even with ₹1 crore.
