Key EPFO Benefits Employees Should Know in 2026

For salaried workers, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) offers more than a retirement savings account.

Regular contributions can build long-term wealth while providing financial support during specific needs.

Here are some important benefits employees should understand in 2026.

Builds a Retirement Corpus

Employees and employers contribute towards the provident fund under EPFO rules. The employee contributes 12% of basic salary, while the employer also contributes 12%.

For example, with a basic salary of ₹30,000, the combined monthly contribution is ₹7,200. Over 30 years, contributions could total ₹25.92 lakh before considering interest and pension benefits.

Offers Tax Advantages

EPF provides tax-efficient long-term savings. Interest credited to the account is generally exempt from income tax, subject to applicable rules.

Moreover, eligible contributions of up to ₹1.5 lakh annually can qualify for a Section 80C deduction under the old tax regime.

Employer Contributions Support Pension

A portion of the employer’s contribution goes towards the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS). Under the applicable allocation, 8.33% is directed towards EPS, subject to the prescribed rules and limits.

The remaining employer contribution goes towards EPF. Importantly, employers cannot recover their contribution from an employee’s wages.

Provides Protection for Families

EPFO benefits can extend to an employee’s family. A valid nomination can make claim settlement easier after the account holder’s death. The Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI) can provide insurance benefits.

EPS can also provide pension benefits to eligible family members. Additionally, EPF accumulations receive protection from court attachment under Section 10 of the EPF Act, 1952, subject to the law.

Allows Withdrawals During Specific Needs

EPF permits eligible members to access funds for certain expenses. These can include housing, medical treatment, education and marriage. Rules also allow specified withdrawals during unemployment and other circumstances.

The account remains portable through the Universal Account Number (UAN). Therefore, employees can carry their EPF account across jobs instead of starting over.

Together, these features make EPFO an important part of financial planning for organised-sector employees.

However, withdrawal and tax rules can vary based on the situation. Employees should check the latest EPFO provisions before making financial decisions.
