Delhi: QR codes in cabs for safety
City roads are known to be dangerous driving environments, and it can be even more frightening when relying on an unknown cab driver to navigate through them. However, the Delhi police is creating a system to ensure cab ride safety.
They are introducing Quick Response Codes (or QR codes) in cabs, which will allow a passenger to track his or her ride and make sure that it is safe.
The Himmat app, which was launched in 2015, can be used to scan the QR codes.
According to Sanjay Baniwal, the special commissioner of police, when a passenger scans a QR code, the details are sent to a special control room made specifically for this purpose.
The monitoring system will then send an SMS (Short Message Service) back to the passenger’s smartphone.
However, the Himmat app is not the only method that can be used in order to avail the facility. If a passenger does not possess a smartphone, he or she can instead send an SMS to the number 8130099100 with the QR code number.
The system is also designed to revert automatically, which is done with an SMS that contains the details of the driver and the vehicle. The journey of the passenger will be tracked in the police control room.
Recently, the Delhi police started the trial run of this QR code system.
The codes have been installed in ten taxis operating at the city’s airport.
In the cab, a card will be placed behind the cab driver, which will contain the QR code, the driver’s picture, and other necessary details.
All of these details will be tracked on the app after scanning the QR code.
Three messages are then sent to the passenger’s smartphone, which will ensure his or her safety.
