Now, wearing a rear seat belt is mandatory if you are sitting in the back seat of a car. The Delhi police launched a special drive to encourage people to wear rear seat belts while traveling in a car. As part of the intensification of its road safety rules, the police took the drive.

The Delhi traffic police decided to intensify road safety rules following the death of industrialist Cyrus Mistry. He died in a road accident on September 4 in Maharashtra. Mistry, who sat in the back seat of the car, did not wear the seat belt. Police said that it is one of the main reasons for his death.

Those who fail to wear a seat belt sitting in the rear seat of a car have to pay a penalty of ₹1,000. The Delhi police issued 17 challans on the first day to those who were found without wearing a rear seat belt while travelling in a car. They were fined ₹1,000.

The Delhi traffic police are conducting campaigns to promote awareness of the importance of wearing seat belts to save lives. They also urged people, not to over-speed vehicles and to wear seat belts for a safe journey.

According to available data, around 1,900 deaths in Delhi alone could be avoided. These accidents happened last year due to the negligence of the drivers or passengers of vehicles.

The Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said wearing a rear seat belt is mandatory for people sitting in the back seat of a car. Yet, most people do not follow it. They are under the impression that wearing a seat belt is mandatory only for people sitting in the front seat.

Gadkari said introducing a seat belt alarm system for rear seats is also a good idea. He added that the ministry thought of making the feature mandatory in the upcoming cars.
