Kota becomes India’s first traffic-light-free city
India has achieved a significant urban milestone, and the spotlight is not on its metros but on a city known more for education than infrastructure.
Kota in Rajasthan, one of the country’s busiest student hubs, has officially become India’s first city to operate without a single traffic signal.
This development marks a bold shift in how urban traffic management can function in fast-growing cities.
Kota’s transformation is the result of a long-term initiative led by the Urban Improvement Trust (UIT), Kota, which adopted a systematic and modern approach to redesigning the city’s road network.
Instead of relying on traditional traffic signals, the city now depends on an interconnected web of ring roads, underpasses, and flyovers that allow vehicles to move continuously.
UIT Kota created a network that focuses on eliminating points where traffic usually slows down.
By planning alternate routes and enabling grade-separated road crossings, the project has made it possible for commuters to travel across the city without encountering red lights.
To make a fully signal-free system possible, Kota has constructed around 25 flyovers and underpasses at crucial intersections.
These structures ensure that traffic does not intersect on the same level, removing the need for traffic lights.
Instead of pausing at crossings, vehicles can now glide through using elevated or subterranean pathways.
This is especially important for Kota, where round-the-year movement spikes due to the arrival of lakhs of students preparing for engineering and medical entrance exams.
The signal-free design is expected to bring several positive changes:
- Reduced traffic congestion, even during high-density hours
- Significant time savings for local residents and long-distance travellers
- Lower accident risk, as fewer intersections mean fewer collision points
- Improved air quality, thanks to reduced idling and smoother vehicle flow
Kota’s achievement shows how mid-sized Indian cities can adopt smart, efficient, and future-ready transport systems.
By eliminating traffic signals entirely, Kota has set an example that other urban centres may study and follow.
This development not only supports smoother mobility but also helps the city manage its heavy student population more efficiently, reinforcing Kota’s position as a progressive and forward-thinking urban hub.
