Benefits of Betel leaves

Eating paan after a good meal during festivals is a prevailed practice in many parts of India. Betel leaves are a main ingredient for paan. Betel leaves have a significant role in many religious rituals.

As per Ayurveda, betel leaves help balance the three doshas or forces of the body and thus protect health.

Here are some medicinal benefits of betel leaves:

  • Betel leaf relieves pain due to its analgesic properties. Applying the paste of betel leaves on the affected area can relieve pain immediately.
  • It helps maintain oral health and prevents tooth decay. Chew paan in small quantity. It relieves bad breath, mouth odour, gum and tooth pain, and oral infections. You can also gargle the mixture of warm water with two drops of betel leaf oil to promote oral health.
  • It eases constipation and other stomach problems. Soak some crushed betel leaves in glass water overnight, and drink it the next day on an empty stomach to relieve constipation. If your stomach is upset, then massage with betel leaf oil on it. If children have a stomachache, then apply a few drops of castor oil on a warm betel leaf and keep the leaf on their stomach.
  • Betel leaf also helps treat cough and cold. To treat chest congestion, apply a few drops of mustard oil on a warm leaf and place the leaf on the chest. You can also consume the concoction of betel leaves to get relief from chest congestion and other breathing issues.
