People are exploring different ways to keep them busy during the lockdown. While some people spend time to experiment with new recipes, some others focus on gardening.

Nagpur-based friends are utilizing their time to grow various ornament plants, fruits and vegetables organically.

Manisha Kulkarni and Ankita Masurkar are the founders of Green Gifts. It is an ornamental plant nursery.

Both have a passion for gardening. Manisha used to help her friends in home décor and personal gifting on special occasions. She turned it into a business.

She along with Ankita started an eco-friendly gifting solution service, Green Gifts. Their business was moving smoothly until the lockdown.

However, they had to stop their business during the lockdown. They decided to focus on greening their homes.

Manisha has an independent bungalow. The house has around 1,000 sq.ft. space in the front and back yard. She was growing some vegetables and flowers there. Yet, she wanted to utilize the space more productively in the lockdown.

As there is no option to buy seeds from vendors, she started procuring them from her kitchen. She collected the seeds of tomato, bell pepper, brinjal etc. after cooking. She sowed them in the soil after drying them.

She took the help of her neighbour for organic farming methods. Now, Manisha is growing saplings of broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, tomato, aubergine etc.

She also planted the seeds of fruits like papaya, pomegranate, orange, sweet lemon etc.

She prepared organic manure and insecticide. She made compost with fallen leaves and wet waste. She used it for her plants.

She made an insecticide using organic liquid soap, baking soda and water and sprayed this liquid to protect her plants from less harmful pests.

She made another insecticide with tobacco for more harmful pests. The insecticide is prepared by soaking tobacco in water overnight. The extract is diluted in another litre of water before used.
