Ambalappuzha Temple: Where Faith Meets Legend

Across Kerala, some temples hold a special place in the hearts of devotees.

The Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple is one such sacred destination.

Located about 14 km from Alappuzha, the temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Devotees worship him here as Parthasarathy, the divine charioteer of Arjuna from the Mahabharata. The idol holds a conch in the left hand and a whip in the right.

The temple ranks among Kerala’s seven major Vaishnava shrines. Its history adds to its spiritual importance.

The ruler of Chembakasserry, Pooradam Thirunal Devanarayanan Thampuran, is believed to have built the temple between the 15th and 17th centuries.

According to tradition, the ruler offered his kingdom to Lord Krishna. He then governed the land as the deity’s representative. This belief remains an important part of the temple’s religious legacy.

The temple also carries strong connections with Guruvayoor. During Tipu Sultan’s raids in 1789, devotees believe the idol of Sree Krishna was brought here for protection. This episode strengthened the spiritual bond between the two temples.

One of the temple’s most cherished traditions is Ambalappuzha Paalpayasam. The famous sweet offering contains milk, rice and sugar.

Devotees believe that Lord Guruvayoorappan visits the temple during the daily puja to taste the offering.

The temple’s rituals and festivals further deepen its significance. During the annual Arattu festival, devotees participate in several ceremonies.

The procession for the holy bath at Erattakkulangara Mahadeva Temple is considered especially auspicious.

Another beloved belief surrounds the Natakashala Sadya. Devotees believe Lord Krishna appears in his child form, Kannan, and serves ghee to those attending the feast.

The temple also has a remarkable cultural legacy. Tradition holds that poet Kunchan Nambiar introduced Ottanthullal here. The art form later became a distinctive part of Kerala’s cultural identity.

For devotees, Ambalappuzha is therefore more than an ancient shrine.

Its legends, rituals and sacred traditions create a deeply personal connection with Lord Krishna.

The temple continues to inspire faith across generations.
