What started as a simple hobby became a successful business for 23-year-old Parvathy Mohanan from Alappuzha, Kerala.

While pursuing her engineering degree, Parvathy began growing Portulaca plants on a one-and-a-half-acre plot near her home.

She never imagined that this pastime would one day become a significant source of income.

Today, she manages to balance her full-time job as a software tester in Infopark, Kakkanad, with running a flourishing Portulaca garden that generates revenue in lakhs annually.

Parvathy, who nurtures over 300 varieties of Portulaca plants sourced from India, Thailand, and Brazil, now fulfils 10 to 15 orders daily for combo packs of these vibrant plants.

Each pack, containing 25 or 50 colours, is carefully packaged and sent to customers across the country.

The business has grown so much that she has employed two women to manage the day-to-day activities. These women help her in packaging and dispatching orders, hence she focuses on her IT job.

Spending time in her garden is not just a business for Parvathy; it’s a therapeutic activity that helps her unwind from the pressures of her tech career.

She spends much time in her garden during the weekend, which helps her rejuvenate. The energy she gets from gardening helps recharge her and makes her active in her work.

Parvathy’s success story is a testament to the potential of turning a passion into a profitable venture.

Even though Portulaca plants are not typically considered high-value in the market, her innovative approach to cultivating and marketing them has proven otherwise.

She believes there are countless opportunities around us to earn a decent income by exploring simple, yet fulfilling avenues.

Her garden is a shining example of how dedication, creativity, and a love for nature can lead to unexpected success.

As she continues to grow her business, Parvathy remains committed to her passion, finding joy in every moment she spends tending to her plants.
