Kashmir’s Global Cinema Debut

Film festivals can transform a destination by connecting local culture with audiences worldwide. Kashmir is now preparing for that opportunity.

Jammu and Kashmir will host its first international film festival, ‘Rang-e-Cinema’, from September 7 to 10.

The Information and Public Relations Department will organise the four-day event.

The festival seeks to give Jammu and Kashmir a stronger place on the global cinema map. It will also encourage filmmaking, cultural exchange and creative partnerships.

Moreover, organisers want to create opportunities for local talent. They also hope to attract filmmakers and strengthen film tourism across the region.

The response has already been significant. Organisers received more than 1,100 submissions from over 80 countries.

Following the selection process, 135 films from 41 countries made the final shortlist.

Indian cinema accounts for 64 shortlisted entries. France follows with 13 films, while Iran has eight. Other participating countries include Germany, Russia, Türkiye, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Qatar, South Korea and the US.

The festival will spread across multiple venues. Screenings will take place at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre and INOX PVR in Srinagar.

Jammu’s Waves Cinema and a venue in Gulmarg will also host programmes.

A floating screen on Dal Lake is expected to become a major attraction. Tourists taking Shikara rides could watch films against the backdrop of the Valley.

Meanwhile, the festival has assembled an international jury. Cinematographer-director Santosh Sivan and sound designer Resul Pookutty are among its members.

German curator Dorothee Wenner, Keiko Bang and filmmaker Himansu Sekhar Khatua complete the panel.

The event will offer awards across nine categories. The total prize pool stands at ₹96 lakh. The Best Film winner will receive ₹25 lakh. Best Director and Best Debut Director will each carry ₹15 lakh.

Additionally, Best Actor awards will offer ₹8 lakh each. Awards for cinematography, sound design and editing will carry ₹5 lakh apiece.

The programme will feature filmmakers and industry professionals from India and abroad.

Alongside films, visitors will experience Kashmir’s handicrafts, handloom, cuisine, music and traditional arts.

With cinema and culture sharing the spotlight, ‘Rang-e-Cinema’ could give Kashmir a distinctive new role in global filmmaking.
