Assam launches Baayu, India’s first 100% electric bike taxi service
In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable mobility, the Assam government has rolled out Baayu, India’s first app-based 100% electric and decentralized bike taxi service.
Launched by Assam Minister of Transport Parimal Suklabaidya in Guwahati, Baayu is a collaborative effort between the Assam State Transport Corporation and Bikozee Ecotech, a local startup.
Baayu aims to usher in a new era of eco-friendly transportation, integrating seamlessly with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).
The initiative is set to create 5,000 livelihood opportunities for driver-partners in Assam, providing electric vehicles, technology platforms, insurance, training, skill development, and operating licenses in adherence to Assam Aggregator Rules 2022.
This sustainable mobility venture is poised to make a significant environmental impact, saving an impressive 29,000 tons of carbon emissions annually.
Furthermore, it is expected to lead to substantial cost savings of ₹73 crores each year, emphasizing its economic viability.
Under the support of NITI Aayog’s Shoonya Zero Pollution Mobility campaign.
This movement seeks to enhance air quality and public health by deploying electric vehicles in the transport and logistics sectors, integrating decentralized technologies like the Beckn protocol on the ONDC platform.
The Baayu initiative, a testament to Assam’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity, is meticulously designed to revolutionize the state’s transportation landscape.
As the first state in India to introduce a 100% electric and decentralized bike taxi service, Assam stands at the forefront of pioneering eco-friendly transportation solutions.
Expressing his excitement, the Assam Transport Minister urged bike riders to strictly adhere to road safety norms while commuting and carrying passengers.
The launch marks a significant step towards a cleaner and greener future, showcasing the state’s dedication to fostering economic growth, promoting entrepreneurship, and embracing environmentally conscious practices.
Baayu’s introduction establishes Assam as a leader in sustainable mobility. Besides, it sets a precedent for other regions to follow suit.
Thus, it creates a ripple effect in the nation’s quest for eco-friendly transportation solutions.
