Assam set to become India’s first state-level oil producer

In a landmark move for India’s energy sector, Assam is poised to become the first state government in the country to participate in oil production directly.

This development follows the successful discovery of hydrocarbons at the Namrup Borhat-1 well in the Dibrugarh district.

The discovery is the result of a collaborative effort between the Assam government and Oil India Limited (OIL).

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the news.

He called the discovery a significant leap forward in achieving energy security and economic resilience for both the state and the country.

This initiative makes Assam the first Indian state government to hold a direct stake in oil exploration and production, marking a shift in how states engage with their natural resources.

The Chief Minister emphasised that the venture reflects a successful investment in oil drilling, which not only validates the state’s efforts in exploration but also strengthens India’s energy infrastructure.

The direct involvement of the Assam government is expected to yield multiple benefits:

  • Increased revenue and royalties for the state,
  • Enhanced employment opportunities,
  • and a stronger role in ensuring the country’s steady energy availability.

CM Sarma also called it a proud moment, highlighting the historical significance of the event.

He emphasised that this step will empower Assam economically while making a meaningful contribution to national goals in the energy sector.

The Namrup Borhat-1 well is seen as a symbol of what can be achieved when states take active ownership of their resources.

It sets a precedent for other states to explore similar partnerships and participate directly in resource management.

This strategic collaboration between Assam and OIL is not just about resource extraction; it reflects a broader vision for self-reliance in energy and inclusive economic growth.

It signals a transformative shift in how India may approach state-led development in the natural resource sector going forward.
