BRICS Signals a Stronger Global South

As global economic and geopolitical tensions deepen, BRICS is pushing for greater cooperation and a stronger summit, BRICS members unanimously adopted the 45-page New Delhi Declaration.

The grouping reaffirmed support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It backed Palestine’s full UN membership and stressed Palestinians’ rights to self-determination and return. It also highlighted Israel’s responsibility to facilitate humanitarian aid to Gaza.

On trade, BRICS criticised rising unilateral tariffs and non-tariff barriers. Members warned that protectionist measures could disrupt supply chains and weaken global commerce. The declaration also opposed climate-related trade restrictions, including carbon border adjustment mechanisms.

Meanwhile, the bloc reiterated its support for WTO reform. It called for an open, fair and predictable trading system, with the WTO remaining at its centre.

Security concerns featured prominently as well. BRICS condemned the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people. It called for zero tolerance towards cross-border terrorism, terror financing and safe havens.

The grouping also addressed tensions in West Asia. It welcomed the Lebanon ceasefire and urged Israel to withdraw from Lebanese territory.

Furthermore, BRICS expressed concern over attacks on civilian infrastructure faster, cheaper and safer cross-border payments. They also called for peaceful nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards.

Financial cooperation is another priority. Members backed faster, cheaper and safer cross-border payments. They also continued discussions on India’s proposed BRICS Risk Lab at Gujarat’s GIFT City.

China and Russia further reaffirmed support for India and Brazil seeking greater roles at its global AI governance statement.

Members also welcomed India’s International Big Cats Alliance initiative, highlighting the bloc’s expanding focus on technology and environmental cooperation with the United Nations, including the Security Council.
