Selling Your Old Phone? Secure It Before You Sell
Selling an old smartphone can be a simple way to earn some extra money.
However, preparing the device properly is essential before it reaches a new owner.
Along with checking its physical condition, you should make sure your personal information is completely protected.
Your smartphone may contain years of private data. Photos, videos, contacts, passwords, emails, financial information and personal conversations can all be stored on it. Leaving this information behind could put your privacy at risk.
Start by backing up everything you want to keep. Transfer important photos, contacts, documents, videos and other files to a trusted cloud service, computer or another phone.
Before deleting anything, confirm that your backup contains all the necessary data.
Next, remove your accounts from the device. Sign out of your Google account or Apple ID, along with email, social media and other apps.
This step protects your accounts and helps the next owner set up the phone without unnecessary complications.
Once your data has been backed up and your accounts have been removed, perform a factory reset. You can find this option in the phone’s settings.
The reset removes personal data, apps and customised settings, restoring the device to its original setup state.
After the reset, check the phone once more. Turn it on and make sure it displays the initial setup screen. Confirm that your accounts, files and personal information are no longer visible.
You should also remove your physical SIM card and memory card, if present. These can contain contacts, messages, photos or other personal information.
Finally, choose a reputable resale platform or buyer. Compare offers and check the payment, pickup and return terms before completing the transaction. A little research can help you avoid unnecessary delays or disputes.
Preparing your smartphone before selling it protects your privacy and gives the next owner a clean device.
Back up your data, remove your accounts, reset the phone and complete a final check before handing it over.
