World’s first solar powered cricket venue

Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru

The Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru became the world’s first cricket stadium powered with solar power. The stadium has recently installed 400kw capacity solar panels which not only power the stadium but also generate revenue for KSCA.

The installed grid can easily power the entire stadium lighting except the huge high intensity floodlights.

The whole system was planned by RenXSol Ecotech Pvt. LTd. It is a solar solutions enterprise based in Bengaluru. The project was executed by MRO-TEK.

The aim of the project is reduce the carbon footprint of people while enjoying the match at the stadium.

Srinivas Kumar from RenXSol has stated that installing the solar panels for power generations was not the difficult part. The main tough part was the design of the building and identifying the right placement of the panels.

The lifespan of these panels is around 25 years and they do not need much of maintenance.

The stadium powered by solar power was inaugurated by the Energy Minister DK Shiva Kumar on Wednesday. The installed solar panels are said to generate 1,700 units of power every day. The panels are installed on the eastern stands.

The stadium used to spend Rs.1 to 1.2 crores just on the electricity bills for using 18 lakh units annually. The new unit is expected generate 6 lakh units and reduce the bills significantly.
