Mini sanitary Napkin Machine for Rural India

A shocking national wide survey about menstrual hygiene by Plan India has revealed that 68 percent of Indian women in rural areas are not able to afford proper sanitary napkins. Sanitary napkins are very essential for proper personal hygiene. Yet, they have very low penetration in India because of the high price. As an alternative to sanitary napkins, it is found in the survey that 81 percent of rural women use unsterilized cloth because of cheaper price.

In order to help rural women with this issue, Muruganatham, 47 has developed a low cost solution. He made portable machines which produces good quality sanitary napkins at a price of just Rs. 1 to Rs. 1.50 per pad.

Muruganatham, who did not even continue his studies after tenth standard, was a man of scientific attitude. He observed that many women suffer this problem and that they cannot afford hygienic products. He took matters into his hand and decided to do something about it.

He analyzed commercially available pads and found they used wood fiber for draining the fluids and retaining shape of the pad. Soon enough his innovation has helped many women. These machines are in place at more than 200 locations already.
