India's defense against Pakistan

A controversy was created when the former Chief of Army Staff, and now Union Minister of state for External Affairs, Gen V.K. Singh, tweeted the words “duty” and “disgust”. The words were apparently related to his attending the Pakistan National Day function last month at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, and where leaders of the Hurriyat Conference were also present.

However, these words could come to represent the condition of relations between India Pakistan under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.

It seems that Pakistan has got the ball in its court after Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote in his letter to Pakistan Prime Minister on National Day that talks can only begin if they are held in an atmosphere which is free from terror and violence. This brings to question as to why the Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar was sent to Islamabad this year and resumption of talks has not been announced.

India has so far responded to Pakistan’s terrorism in a purely defensive manner. The passive reaction with defense using Maginot Line-like ditch-cum-bunds on the international border and fencing on the LoC shows only the lack of political will.
