India cracks down on Pakistan after deadly terror attack

In a strong diplomatic response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India has taken various decisive steps against Pakistan.

The attack, which claimed 26 lives, has drawn nationwide outrage and prompted swift government action.

Firstly, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960. This historic agreement will remain on hold until Pakistan ends support for cross-border terrorism. The government emphasised that future cooperation hinges on credible and permanent actions from Pakistan.

Secondly, India closed the Integrated Check Post at Attari. Those who previously crossed with valid endorsements can return via the route until May 1. No further civilian movement from Pakistan is allowed through this post for now.

Thirdly, India revoked all SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) privileges for Pakistani nationals. Visas already issued under this scheme stand cancelled. The government directed all affected individuals to leave the country within 48 hours.

Fourth, India declared Pakistan’s defence, naval, and air advisors in New Delhi as persona non grata. They have been given one week to leave. Simultaneously, India announced the withdrawal of its own defence officials from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

Fifth, India will reduce diplomatic staff in both countries. Each High Commission must cut its strength to 30 officials, down from 55, by May 1.

India also suspended all visa services to Pakistani nationals. Those currently in India must leave by April 27. However, medical visa holders may stay until April 29.

Lastly, the Border Security Force has scaled down its daily Retreat Ceremony at Attari, Hussainiwala, and Sadki. The symbolic handshake between Indian and Pakistani guards has been suspended.

Additionally, the gates will now remain shut during the ceremony. According to the BSF, this move reflects India’s serious concern and signals that peace cannot coexist with provocation.

Through these steps, India has sent a clear and firm message. It will not tolerate cross-border terror, and meaningful peace requires accountability and change.
