In a landmark achievement that underscores the increasing inclusivity within the Indian defence forces, Suman Kumari has risen to prominence by becoming the first woman sniper in the Border Security Force (BSF).

Her completion of an arduous eight-week sniper course at the Central School of Weapons and Tactics in Indore not only showcases her exceptional skills but also marks a significant milestone for women in the military.

Hailing from the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, Kumari’s journey from a modest background to making history in the BSF is nothing short of inspirational.

Kumari’s father is an electrician. Her mother is a homemaker. Kumari’s determination propelled her into the annals of the BSF’s storied history.

Joining the force in 2021, she has also demonstrated prowess in unarmed combat, further solidifying her status as a versatile and skilled officer.

Kumari’s motivation to enrol in the sniper course was fueled by her firsthand experiences with the threats posed by sniper attacks across the border while commanding a platoon in Punjab.

Her initiative and courage impressed her superiors, leading to their full support for her participation in this challenging program.

Despite being the solitary female among 56 male participants, Kumari’s exceptional performance throughout the course has paved the way for her to serve as a beacon of inspiration for other women aspiring to enter similar military roles.

The sniper course is known for its rigorous demands on physical and mental strength. It includes intensive training focused on concentration, camouflaging, and stealth tactics to approach the enemy undetected.

This course ranks among the most challenging in the military, second only to commando training.

Kumari’s achievement in earning the instructor grade status highlights her exceptional skill and perseverance. Besides, it also qualifies her to impart her knowledge and expertise as a sniper instructor.

Suman Kumari’s groundbreaking success as the BSF’s first woman sniper is a testament to her hard work, determination, and the evolving dynamics of gender roles within the Indian defence services.

Her story is a powerful reminder of the potential that lies in challenging conventional boundaries and striving for excellence, irrespective of the field.
