Gadkari: Rs 3 lakh crore of road projects

Nitin Gadkari, Union minister of road transport has stated to Business standard journalists that the public-private partnership (PPP) model is a compulsion because the government resources can be focused on the rural and agriculture sectors.

He stated that when he took charge, road construction was going on at a pace of two km/day. Today, it is 12 km/day, which could go up to 14 km/day by the end of this month. They are planning a target of 30 km/day in two years. He added that, at the time of previous government, there were a lot of problems with environment approvals. Even land acquisition was an issue, which led to collapse of private interest. The target for them is to contribute two percent of gross domestic products with the roads and ports sector. They also planned a project for the Chaar Dhaam Yatra.

As for toll booths, Gadkari has stated that they have closed 62 toll points and issued advertisements on those. Any project which was below Rs. 100 crore will be exempted from toll. They are also planning to convert 12 major ports into smart cities. These 12 are apart from the 100 smart cities. Gaddarki states that he is not asking government for any money regarding this.
