India’s road safety crisis: A wake-up call
India faces an alarming road safety crisis, with lakhs of lives lost annually due to road accidents.
During the Parliament’s Winter Session, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, expressed deep concern over this growing issue.
Highlighting grim statistics, he revealed that most victims are young individuals aged 18 to 34 years, showcasing the devastating impact on the nation’s youth.
Uttar Pradesh leads the list of states with the highest number of road accident fatalities, recording 23,652 deaths, accounting for 13.7% of the national total.
Tamil Nadu follows with over 18,347 deaths, while Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh also report alarming figures with 15,366 and 13,798 deaths, respectively.
Nationwide, road accidents claim over 1.78 lakh lives annually, a figure that continues to rise despite ongoing efforts.
Gadkari admitted his department’s failure to achieve the goal of reducing road accidents and fatalities by 50% by the end of 2024.
Instead, accidents have increased, and compliance with road safety laws remains inadequate.
He pointed out common violations such as ignoring helmet rules, jumping red signals, and trucks violating lane discipline as major contributors to accidents.
The lack of public fear of legal repercussions further exacerbates the problem.
To curb fatalities, Gadkari has ordered the adoption of international standards for bus body designs and manufacturing in India.
He also suggested equipping buses with hammers near windows to ensure swift escape during emergencies.
Addressing truck parking issues, he emphasized stricter enforcement of lane discipline.
Gadkari’s commitment to improving road safety stems from personal experience.
A major accident involving him and his family left a lasting impact, driving his resolve to address the issue.
With young lives at stake, India must take immediate and effective measures to enhance road safety.
Gadkari’s appeal serves as a reminder of the urgent need for stricter laws, better infrastructure, and public awareness to combat this growing crisis.
