AIIMS Chief suggests a complete lockdown
Many states in India have been imposing night curfews, weekend lockdowns etc. Despite the measures taken by various states, the COVID-19 cases are not controlled. New cases are rising day by day.
In this scenario, AIIMS Chief Dr Randeep Guleria said that a complete lockdown in the country is essential to control the transmission of the coronavirus. He suggested a strict nationwide lockdown, which is similar to that of last year. He emphasized that the aggressive lockdown only could save the country from containing the spread of the virus. It should be imposed in all areas where the positivity rate is more than 10 per cent.
States like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Haryana etc., are imposing lockdown in few or all places across the state. Many other states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, West Bengal etc., are imposing night curfews. And many states have imposed a weekend lockdown also.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal extended the lockdown in the national capital for another week, till May 10th. As all these measures are not completely contained the transmission of COVID-19, Dr Guleria suggested a complete lockdown.
An aggressive lockdown is essential, and it is the only method to manage COVID-19 and save people.
India crossed the milestone of four lakh cases. The death toll rose to 2,11,853.
Notably, Anthony Fauci, a top U.S. epidemiologist, also suggested a lockdown for a few weeks in India. He said that the lockdown controls the spread of the coronavirus.
Besides, India has a shortage of oxygen and essential medicines. The lockdown time can be used to organize things like oxygen supplies, medicines, and PPEs. He said that not a lockdown for the long-term, but at least a temporary lockdown is essential to containing the transmission of the coronavirus.
