India on alert as Human Metapneumovirus cases rise
India is witnessing a rise in cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory illness that causes symptoms like fever, cough, and sore throat.
Seven cases have been confirmed nationwide, prompting health authorities to heighten surveillance and public awareness.
The latest infections were reported in Nagpur, Maharashtra, where two children aged seven and 14 tested positive.
They were admitted to a private hospital on January 3 with complaints of fever and cough. After testing, the virus was confirmed.
Maharashtra health officials are closely monitoring the situation and preparing guidelines to prevent further spread.
Other states have also reported cases. Gujarat confirmed an infection in a two-month-old infant in Ahmedabad, while Karnataka reported two cases in Bengaluru.
Tamil Nadu has also recorded two infections. With Maharashtra sharing borders with Gujarat and Karnataka, health authorities in the region remain vigilant.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda reassured the public, stating that HMPV is not a new virus.
Discovered in 2001 in the Netherlands, the virus has been reported worldwide for decades. The minister emphasized that India is prepared, with robust measures in place to safeguard public health.
Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra reviewed the national situation and confirmed that no significant surge in respiratory illnesses has been observed.
He urged states to enhance public awareness about preventive measures and boost surveillance systems to detect and manage HMPV cases effectively.
In Maharashtra, the Health Minister has called a high-level meeting to discuss containment strategies. Union Minister of State for Health also participated in the meeting.
HMPV primarily affects the upper and lower respiratory tract, posing risks to children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
Authorities have urged individuals with symptoms to seek medical attention promptly and follow preventive measures.
While the rise in cases is concerning, health experts stress calmness and vigilance.
India’s proactive steps in monitoring and managing HMPV are aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
