Think twice before pairing these foods with mangoes
Summer meals often revolve around juicy mangoes, refreshing drinks and rich traditional dishes.
However, some popular food pairings may quietly affect digestion and overall comfort.
Mangoes contain natural sugars, digestive enzymes and a heating nature according to Ayurveda.
Therefore, combining them with certain foods can sometimes lead to bloating, acidity or stomach discomfort.
One common pairing is mango with curd. Mango lassi remains a summer favourite across India. Yet, Ayurveda considers this combination difficult for digestion because mango is heating, while curd is cooling and heavy. As a result, some people may experience gas, fermentation or bloating after consumption.
Another combination to avoid is mango with bitter gourd. Although people rarely mix them directly, both can appear in the same meal. Experts believe the contrast between mango’s hot nature and karela’s cooling effect may trigger nausea, vomiting or acidity in sensitive individuals.
Spicy and fried foods alongside mangoes can also create digestive stress. Popular combinations like aam ras with pakodas or puri may feel satisfying initially. However, oily and spicy foods slow digestion and increase stomach heat. Consequently, some people notice throat irritation, heaviness or even acne flare-ups after such meals.
Cold drinks and soda immediately after mangoes may also cause problems. Both contain high sugar levels, which can rapidly increase blood sugar. In addition, chilled beverages may interfere with digestion and sometimes trigger acidity or a sore throat during hot weather.
Alcohol paired with mango deserves caution as well. Mango cocktails have become trendy, especially during summer gatherings. Still, alcohol can intensify the fermentation of natural sugars inside the stomach. This process may lead to gas, bloating, nausea and sluggish digestion.
Despite these concerns, experts do not suggest completely avoiding beloved mango dishes.
Occasional indulgence remains perfectly fine for most healthy individuals. Instead, moderation and mindful food pairing play a bigger role in maintaining digestive comfort.
Mangoes offer vitamins, antioxidants and fibre when eaten sensibly. Therefore, enjoying them separately from heavy, oily or conflicting foods may help the body absorb their benefits more effectively.
Sometimes, small adjustments in meal combinations can make summer eating both healthier and more enjoyable.
