Miyazaki mango: The ruby-coloured fruit worth lakhs
Rare fruit varieties often capture global attention, but few command the prestige and value of the Miyazaki mango.
Originating in Japan’s Miyazaki Prefecture, this premium mango variety is widely regarded as one of the most expensive fruits in the world.
Unlike conventional mangoes that develop a yellow or golden shade when ripe, Miyazaki mangoes turn a striking deep red with hints of purple. This distinctive appearance has earned them the nickname “Eggs of the Sun” in Japan.
Each Miyazaki mango typically weighs around 250 grams and is known for its rich sweetness, smooth texture, and high juice content.
The fruit develops under carefully controlled growing conditions, which contribute to its exceptional quality. Moreover, its limited production makes it highly sought after in premium fruit markets.
The rarity of the variety plays a major role in its value. In Japan, Miyazaki mangoes can fetch more than ₹2.5 lakh per kilogram, while prices in India often reach around ₹1.5 lakh per kilogram. As a result, the fruit is often viewed as a luxury product rather than a regular seasonal crop.
Recently, the variety gained attention after a farmer in Ayodhya successfully grew Miyazaki mangoes in his home orchard.
Although the tree currently bears only a handful of fruits, the cultivation demonstrates the growing interest in exotic and high-value mango varieties among Indian farmers.
What makes Miyazaki truly unique is the combination of visual appeal, scarcity, and premium taste.
Furthermore, the fruit contains high levels of natural sugars and antioxidants, enhancing its appeal among consumers seeking exclusive produce. Its vibrant colour, unusual origin, and limited availability have transformed it into a symbol of luxury fruit cultivation.
As Indian growers experiment with rare international varieties, Miyazaki stands out as a remarkable example of how a single fruit can redefine the value of horticulture.
For mango enthusiasts, it represents far more than a seasonal delicacy; it is a rare agricultural treasure.
