First Female Combat Officer of BSF
In what can only be termed as a step towards gender equality, Border Security Force (BSF) has proudly announced their first woman field officer.
This step is of a great importance considering the fact that in the 51 years of existence, this is the first time a woman has been commissioned to be part of the border protection force which is the world’s largest.
When you think about the matter from how long overdue this was, India taking such a step feels like a very historic move.
The candidate is a 25-year-old native of Bikaner, Rajasthan. Tanushree Pareek now holds the title of the being the first woman field officer of BSF. She led the passing out parade of the 67 trainee officers at the Border Security Force Camp at Tekanpur.
Her posting has been given at the India-Pakistan border in Punjab to command a unit.
During the convocation ceremony of Tanushree, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke about the landmark occasion. He praised Tanushree and hoped that this will encourage more women to follow suit.
He said that he is happy BSF finally got a woman field officer and hopes to see many more women reaching this position.
He personally put the ranks on the shoulders of Tanushree at the ceremony.
It was only in 2013 that BSF even allowed women to be inducted in its ranks. It took four years for such an occasion to happen.
Tanushree and the trainees along with her were put through an intense 52-week training programme to teach them about intelligence gathering, battle craft etc.
After she took her UPSC examination in 2014, she was allowed in.
BSF of India is considered the largest border protection force in the world. It consists of 2.5 lakh men and now one woman posted at the border to keep intruders out. They mainly work at border of India with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
