Centre boosts joint border security
Border security requires coordinated action beyond the deployment of armed forces alone.
With this approach, the Union Home Ministry has stressed the need for a “quadrangular security grid” involving the BSF, Army, border residents and local administration.
During a review of border preparedness in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district, the ministry highlighted that secure frontiers depend on continuous coordination among all four stakeholders.
Officials maintained that national security cannot remain limited to security agencies alone. Instead, civilian participation and administrative support must work alongside defence forces.
The ministry clarified that the proposed framework should not be viewed as a simple four-layer arrangement.
Rather, it represents a shared responsibility system designed to respond collectively to every possible threat along international borders.
Special emphasis was placed on tackling modern security challenges, including drone-assisted smuggling and infiltration.
Authorities stressed the importance of close coordination between border forces, district police and civil administration.
Monitoring networks receiving illegal consignments from across the border was also identified as a priority area.
As part of strengthening border management, coordinated meetings involving security agencies and state administrations have already been conducted in several frontier regions, including Bihar, Rajasthan, Kutch, Tripura and West Bengal.
The objective remains improving real-time cooperation and intelligence-sharing mechanisms across sensitive border zones.
The ministry additionally underlined the strategic importance of developing border villages through the Centre’s Vibrant Villages Programme.
Officials noted that stronger infrastructure and welfare delivery in frontier areas would help integrate local communities more closely with national development.
Authorities also encouraged regular outreach programmes for students and youth living in border regions.
According to the ministry, creating awareness among younger generations remains essential for strengthening long-term national security.
The broader framework envisions the BSF, Army and citizens forming the backbone of border protection, while local administration provides institutional support.
Officials further stated that India’s national security structure has witnessed a major transformation in recent years through integrated planning and coordinated policy measures.
