West Bengal heightens vigilance amid border security challenges

In response to escalating infiltration risks and concerns over the situation in Bangladesh, West Bengal has ramped up security efforts.

State police have expressed apprehensions regarding the misuse of residency loopholes by Bangladeshis to acquire Indian passports, highlighting vulnerabilities in the existing verification process.

During a recent press conference, senior officials from the West Bengal police addressed the pressing security concerns.

Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar pointed out that the task of verifying passport addresses falls under the jurisdiction of the passport authorities, not the police.

He criticized the current procedures, stating they were flawed and required urgent revision. He also emphasized the need for updated guidelines to address these systemic weaknesses effectively.

Additional Director General Jawed Shamim supported these observations, adding that the police were intensifying their coordination with other agencies to ensure no unauthorized individuals exploited the system.

He reassured that strict measures were being taken to prevent any misuse of documents for acquiring Indian passports in the state.

The efficiency of West Bengal’s law enforcement in handling threats has been reflected in its recent operations.

A notable success was the arrest of a suspected militant linked to the banned group Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen in a joint operation with Jammu and Kashmir police.

The arrest, facilitated by intelligence from the state’s Special Task Force, underscored the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration.

The DG highlighted the state’s strong track record in combating militancy and stressed the importance of maintaining this vigilance.

Referring to the challenges posed by border security, Kumar indirectly mentioned the role of the Border Security Force in addressing cross-border infiltration.

Despite these challenges, he assured that the state police remained proactive in intercepting infiltrators and transferring them to appropriate authorities.

Acknowledging the role of public cooperation, Kumar noted that collective efforts between law enforcement and citizens were instrumental in maintaining peace and security.

West Bengal’s heightened vigilance, coupled with a focus on closing systemic loopholes, reflects its commitment to safeguarding the region against evolving threats.
