Many people aim at having a stable job especially a government job. The number of people who are actually farming is reducing in India as well. However, Harish wanted to do something different. His example may inspire more young graduates to take up agriculture as a career.

As per Census 2011, India has 127.6 million cultivators whom have farming as their main occupation. This is less than 10% of the total population. The number of farmers reduced by 15 million farmers compared to 1991.

At the same time, there are around 1.5 million engineering students graduating every year in India. It is reported that 80% of them remain unemployed. Even in such situation, many youth do not look at farming as a career option.

However, Harish Dhandev left his government job and opted for farming. Now he is very successful with turnover of his farm ranging from 1.5 crore to Rs.2 crore.

Harish had 80 acres of ancestral land in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. He started by approaching the agricultural department and get the soil on his land tested. After the tests, he planted aloe vera in about 15 to 20 acres of land initially. The Aloe Vera saplings were expensive which made the initial investment high. However, the plants quickly sprouted several baby plants around themselves. This turned out to be a success. Harish’s initial 80,000 saplings quickly grew to 7 lakh.

That was the beginning of his success. Over the years, Harish bought more land and now grows aloe vera in 100 acres. He also plants pomegranates, amla and gumba in some of the land he has acquired.
