In the heart of Kachapuram village in Mantralayam Mandal, Kurnool district resides a living testament of compassion and selflessness, Muthu Lakshmi, affectionately known as Amma.

At the age of 75, Amma dedicated her life to the service of orphaned, abandoned children, and destitutes through the Santhi Ashram, a sanctuary she founded in 1981.

Amma’s journey of love and service began when, in 1979, she rescued an abandoned newborn near Tungabhadra railway station on her return journey from her native village.

This poignant incident ignited her purpose, leading her to establish the ashram, which has since provided a haven for over 2,000 children in the last four decades.

Located in a two-storey building equipped with basic amenities, Santhi Ashram stands as a testament to Amma’s unwavering commitment.

All the income she earns from her 8 acres of agricultural land goes towards sustaining the ashram’s operations, ensuring that over 50 children currently find shelter within its walls.

Beyond providing a roof, Amma extends her care to the children’s futures. Over 40 marriages of those brought up in the ashram have been solemnized by Amma. Besides, she also supports the needs of the girls post-marriage, including overseeing deliveries with her blessings.

Amma’s service has created a ripple effect of kindness. Many once-orphaned children have not only found success but are also giving back.

Somanna, a semi-orphan who benefited from Amma’s care, now stands by her side, contributing to the ashram’s operations after marrying an orphan girl nurtured by Amma.

As Amma celebrates only one festival, her birthday on May 5 – the ashram thrives on a singular motto: service.

Undeterred by age, Amma remains resolute, declaring her determination to continue her selfless service in the years to come.

In a world often filled with challenges, Muthu Lakshmi’s enduring love and dedication shine as a beacon of hope, proving that one person’s compassion can transform countless lives.
