This 22 year old rescues 111 children
A brave 22 year old girl rescued 111 children working as laborers. Read on to find out how she successfully did a secret operation to rescue kids working in big ceramic units.
Jharna Joshi, a student from Ahmedabad is heroine of this brave tale. In a twist of fate, she visited her cousin’s house in Morbi in the first week of April to spend her vacation. At that time, her eye caught the children being transported in buses. She noticed that these buses were not school.
With her curiosity piqued, she followed the buses and found that they were being taken to Sonaki ceramic unit located on Ghuntu Road. She wanted to find out more about what is happening and the ages of the children who are working there.
Jharna joined at the ceramic unit in order to find out more information secretly. Despite there not being any job vacancies, she managed to find a job pasting and design of cups and saucers. She worked there for 15 days and found out that most of the children working there were below 18 years. She also found out that they were forced to work from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. The children were not even given permission to go outside and some of them were forced to work in stressful areas like furnaces without any water or food supply.
Jharna then went to the concerned department to file a report. She also wrote the chief minister’s office and personally visited Gandhinagar. She was assured that action will be taken.
The unit was raided by officials from social defence department, police, and labour and employment department along with a factory inspector and child protection officer. 111 children were rescued. 100 of them were girls.
M C Karia, the deputy labour commissioner of Rajkot region said that this is the biggest rescue operation of child laborers in Saurashtra.
