WhatsApp tests revolutionary offline file-sharing feature
WhatsApp, the Meta-owned social media messaging platform is one of the most widely used social networks across the globe. It comes with new features from time to time for its users.
Currently, it is exploring new technological territories with its latest feature in testing. This new feature is said to allow its users to share files offline.
Named “People Nearby,” this feature enables the transfer of documents, media, and more between users. And there is no need for an internet connection for this.
The innovative offline sharing option is akin to Android’s Nearby Share and Apple’s AirDrop. It was recently discovered in WhatsApp’s beta version 2.24.9.22 for Android, as reported by WABetaInfo.
This addition could significantly enhance the user experience by facilitating easier and quicker file exchanges in scenarios lacking internet access.
People Nearby operates via Bluetooth, bypassing the internet entirely. Users looking to employ this feature must navigate to the Settings menu within WhatsApp, where they can access the People Nearby section.
However, for the feature to function, several permissions are necessary. Some of these include access to media, Bluetooth for connecting devices locally, and location services to detect nearby devices.
The feature ensures privacy and security during use; it is end-to-end encrypted. Furthermore, it conceals phone numbers throughout the discovery and file transfer process.
Currently, it remains under development within the WhatsApp Android beta environment, and its availability for iOS users or a broader rollout remains uncertain.
In addition to file sharing, WhatsApp’s recent updates in its Android beta include tools for community group members to organize events.
This functionality underscores WhatsApp’s commitment to enhancing group interactions and community building within the app.
As WhatsApp continues to test and refine these features, users can look forward to a more versatile and user-friendly experience, ensuring that the platform remains a top choice for global communication.
