Smart meter update made simple: Link your mobile in minutes
India’s shift toward digital utilities is making electricity management faster and more convenient for consumers.
With the rollout of smart prepaid meters under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), users can now handle essential updates without visiting electricity offices.
Linking or updating a mobile number with a prepaid meter has become a quick digital task. Earlier, consumers had to stand in queues and submit requests manually.
Now, the process is accessible through mobile apps or official websites, saving both time and effort.
To begin with, users should install the electricity provider’s official app from the Play Store. After logging in using the customer ID, they can navigate to the Profile Settings or the Manage Account section.
There, the registered mobile number can be edited easily. Once the new number is entered, an OTP verification step ensures security. After confirmation, the number gets linked to the prepaid meter.
Alternatively, consumers can use the official website of their electricity provider. After logging in, they need to visit the Profile or Personal Details section.
By selecting the mobile number option, they can enter and verify the new number using an OTP. This method works well for users who prefer desktops or do not use mobile apps.
However, if both digital methods fail, there is still a simple fallback. Consumers can dial 1912 and request assistance from customer support.
They must provide their customer ID along with their old and new phone numbers for verification. The executive then updates the details on their behalf.
Meanwhile, a significant regulatory update has also emerged. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has relaxed its earlier rule on mandatory prepaid smart meters.
The revised regulation removes the compulsory prepaid condition introduced in 2022. As a result, consumers now have more flexibility in how they use smart metering services.
These changes reflect a strong push toward user-friendly systems. Digital updates, reduced paperwork, and flexible policies are making electricity services more accessible across India.
