Smart Tampons that can Help Detect Cervical Cancer

In order to help solve women issues, Ridhi Tariyal, an Indian-American entrepreneur along with Stephen Gire, a scientist, came up with a new innovation. They wanted to change the fact that many women’s health issues go undetected for a long period of time.

They developed a new system which helps women to find out about their problems on their own in the comfort of their homes. It is a smart tampon system which detects warning signs in menstrual blood. The tampon they developed collects blood sample and is equipped to test it for a range of biomarkers. The information collected by the tampon is sent to a database that women can use to track their own reproductive health.

The two Harvard trained researchers wanted to make such a technology after realizing that many women go to check-ups only after it is too late to diagnose the disease. Using this technology women can get their own tests done without having to worry about anything.

The tampon is helpful in early detection and treatment of many diseases like endometriosis, cervical cancer, polycystic ovarian syndrome, uterine fibroids, etc. It also helps check for cysts, infections, and STDs.


Women can also the tampon to track their anti-mullerium hormone levels. The tracked data can be accessed so they can use when family planning.

The two started a start-up named NextGen Jane in 2014 which was when they began working on smart tampons.

They are working on adding more high quality tests to the tampon so that women can test themselves every month. The smart tampon is still in testing and in the midst of clinical trials for endometriosis among many others. The technology might still take some time before it comes to the market. The team hopes to release a working prototype by next year.
