JalSevak: Pioneering water recycling for a sustainable future

In the face of escalating environmental challenges, Pune-based startup JalSevak emerges as a beacon of innovation, offering practical solutions for water wastage and management.

Established three years ago by Abhijit Sathe, JalSevak is on a mission to revolutionize the way urban India utilizes and conserves water.

Urban residents in India have access to approximately 150 litres of fresh water daily. Half of this water is used for showering, laundry, and other household activities, producing a significant amount of greywater.

This type of wastewater, characterized by minimal pathogen content, sees less than 5% recycled within the country.

Addressing this issue, JalSevak introduces an efficient greywater recycling system suitable for a wide range of applications. They are useful both to residential homes as well as commercial establishments.

The system, designed to be compatible with both new constructions and existing buildings, promises a reduction of 35-40% in fresh water usage.

It stands out for being 80% more cost-effective than traditional Sewage Treatment Plants, coupled with a user-friendly electronic control system that minimizes the need for manual oversight.

JalSevak’s journey began with an initial investment of ₹15 lakh from Sathe, which led to a revenue of ₹5.50 lakh last year.

With projections indicating a jump to ₹50 lakh this year, the startup’s growth reflects an increasing recognition of the need for sustainable water management solutions.

Initially focusing on individual homeowners, JalSevak has expanded its reach to the hospitality industry, among others.

The startup partnered with resorts that depend heavily on water tankers and face considerable annual water expenses. It not only offers a solution to reduce costs but also contributes to environmental conservation.

JalSevak’s efforts have been recognized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. It was awarded in the Swachhata Startup Challenge. Its innovative approach to water recycling is poised to make a significant impact on India’s water management practices.

As it continues to gain momentum, JalSevak represents a promising step forward in the global fight against water wastage and environmental degradation.
