Noida treats sewage effectively
Noida in the country is going to become zero sewage discharge city with its effective plans.
In order to cater to the needs of the growing number of high-rise apartments, the Noida Authority established a sewage water treatment plant in Sector 168.
However, its massive sewage treatment plant has improved its capacity from 50 million litres per day (MLD) to 100 MLD to meet the growing needs of the people.
Normally, the untreated water is dumped into the Yamuna river and contaminates it. But, here the water is treated in this plant and it would pass through 20 km of pipelines. This water is used to irrigate parks and other “green areas” of neighboring Sectors.
The Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) was established in Sector 168 mainly to enable the dumping of only treated water in the polluted river.
The Noida Authority says that recycling and reuse of wastewater is very important in water management. It helps increase the available water as well as reduces contamination of water bodies due to the dumping of untreated water into them.
As major rivers like Ganga, Yamuna etc. are contaminated, the city mainly depends on groundwater. This demand has been increasing since the past decade.
Hence, groundwater reserves have fallen. The reports show that the groundwater table has been falling quickly by 1.5m every year for the past five years.
Usage of recycled sewage water will reduce the stress on the groundwater table. Currently, 44 per cent of water comes from groundwater while the remaining comes from Ganga. The silting on the Upper Ganga has also been increasing since last year.
As a result, the authorities are forced to deliver tankers to residents to meet their needs. Hence, it is essential for the city to reduce the load on its groundwater.
