UN to declare yoga as Indian heritage?

UNESCO director general Irina Bokova has stated that yoga is in the list of elements which are being considered by the Intangible Heritage Committee for inscription on UNESCO’s register. PM Modi was instrumental regarding getting the United Nations to declare June 21 as the International Yoga Day. It was endorsed by 175 out of 193 members.

Bokova has stated that many of her friends have benefitted greatly both spiritually and physically with the practice of yoga in difficult times. She added that yoga is a unique living tradition of India. The general conference of UNESCO in October will also look to endorse the international yoga day as asked by Prime Minister Modi.

If yoga is selected, then it will become the 31st intangible cultural heritage which has been listed from India so far with UNESCO. Recently, the permanent delegation of India to UNESCO recently began yoga classes to all ambassadors, delegations and secretariat at UNESCO.

According to the statement of Indian Mission, yoga is being practiced by approximately 250 million people across the world. There are three million people in France alone. The art of yoga which is about right living has been practiced and perfected in India since thousands of years. The foundations of yoga were written in 200 AD in Yoga Sutra of Patanjali. It is truly an integral part of Indian culture.
