PM Modi embarks on first official state visit to the US

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-nation trip, commencing with his first official state visit to the United States from June 21-24.

The primary objective of the visit is to strengthen India-US ties in crucial sectors such as trade, commerce, innovation, and technology.

PM Modi is set to engage with business leaders, interact with the Indian community, and meet thought leaders during his visit.

PM Modi will initiate his US visit in New York, where he will lead the International Yoga Day celebrations at the United Nations headquarters alongside global leaders and the UN leadership.

Subsequently, he will travel to Washington on the same day for a private engagement with US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.

A ceremonial welcome awaits PM Modi at the White House on June 22, followed by a formal bilateral meeting with President Biden.

A state dinner hosted by the Bidens in his honour is scheduled for Thursday evening.

Additionally, the Prime Minister will engage with select Chief Executive Officers of prominent companies. He will also attend a state luncheon hosted by US Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Prime Minister Modi will address the Indian-American community at the Reagan Centre, acknowledging their significant role in the bilateral relationship.

Notably, he has been invited to address a Joint Session of the US Congress, an indication of the consistent bipartisan support received by India-US ties.

During the visit, discussions between PM Modi and President Biden will encompass enhancing trade and investment relations. Besides, they will foster closer collaboration in the technology domain, including telecom, space, and manufacturing.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra expects a roadmap for defence industrial cooperation to be a significant outcome of the visit, encompassing all aspects of defence co-production and co-development.

This state visit holds historical significance, as PM Modi becomes the third Indian leader to embark on such a trip to the United States.

The previous state visits were made by former president Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan in June 1963 and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in November 2009.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official state visit to the United States marks an opportunity to strengthen bilateral ties in various sectors.
