India is celebrating Teachers’ Day today. In this context, it is apt to remember popular gurus of ancient India. There were many male gurus in the epics and you might have heard or read about them several times.

For a change, the list of notable female gurus of ancient India is brought to you.

Ghosha was the daughter of Kakshivat and granddaughter of Dirghatamas. She was a great philosopher. She had scripted two hymns in Rigveda. Each hymn contains 14 verses. She was proficient in Vedas and mantras. She was known as a Brahmavadini.

Maitreyi was one of the most intellectual women of ancient India. 10 of the Rigveda hymns are attributed to Maitreyi. She was a philosopher and seer. Her contributions to propagate education in India are remarkable. She was known as a Brahmavadini.


Gargi was the daughter of sage Vachaknu. She composed several hymns. She was one of the renowned Brahmavadinis. She was a great philosopher and popular guru of the Vedas. She had written many hymns in the Rigveda. She was one of the participants in brahmayajna organized by the King Janak of Videha. She challenged the eminent scholar Yajnavalkya by questioning on the soul.

Lopamudra was known as a Brahmavadini. She was the wife of the sage Agastya. Many hymns in Rigveda are attributed to her. She was a great philosopher and visualized the Panchadasi mantra of the Sakta tradition.

Princess Hemalekha was a great scholar. She was believed to live in the Dwapara Yuga. She was a spiritual guru to her husband Prince Hemachuda. She changed the worldly nature of her husband and moved him in the spiritual path to attain Brahma Gyan. Her story was mentioned in Tripura Rahasya.

Queen Chudala was the daughter of King of Saurashtra. She became a spiritual guru to her husband King Sikhidhwaj. She was a great scholar and attained Brahma Gyan. Her story was cited in Yoga Vasistha.
