Ashadha Purnima: A day to honour Gurus and embrace wisdom

Ashadha Purnima, falling on the full moon day of the Ashadha month, holds deep spiritual and cultural value in Hinduism.

In 2025, it will be observed on Thursday, July 10, starting at 1:40 AM and ending at 2:08 AM on July 11.

This sacred day is known by several names, Guru Purnima, Ved Vyas Purnima, and Ashadha Purnima.

Devotees worship Lord Vishnu, Goddess Saraswati, and their Gurus, seeking blessings for wisdom and spiritual growth.

On Ashadha Purnima, devotees observe Gopadma Vrat and follow the below-mentioned rituals:

  • Rise early and bathe before sunrise.
  • Worship Lord Vishnu with flowers, incense, and lamps.
  • Chant His names throughout the day.
  • Offer food, clothes, and jewellery to Brahmins.
  • Worship cows and apply a tilak as a sign of respect.

When done with devotion, this vrat helps fulfil wishes and absolve past sins.

This day is also Guru Purnima, a time to honour mentors and spiritual guides.

Disciples perform Guru Puja to express gratitude. Teachers, parents, and elders who guide us are all revered.

Worshippers also perform Saraswati Puja, offering kheer, malpua, and other items to the Goddess of knowledge. Devotees also honour the Navagrahas and Lord Ganesha.

Special Nakshatra Puja is done, especially if the Moon falls in Uttarashada or Purvashada Nakshatra. Donating, meditating, and chanting during this time bring strong spiritual merit.

Ashadha Purnima also marks the birth of Ved Vyas, the sage who composed the Mahabharata and compiled the Vedas. Celebrating this day honours the power of sacred knowledge and its eternal influence.

Ashadha Purnima is a blend of devotion, gratitude, and learning. Through fasting, worship, or remembering our teachers, it reminds us to live with humility and seek wisdom.

It’s a day to honour our Gurus with love and reflect on the values they have shared, inspiring us to grow with integrity and remain rooted in knowledge and respect.
