Chaitra Purnima: A day of reflection and divine blessings

Chaitra Purnima, the full moon day in the Chaitra month, holds deep significance in Hinduism. In 2025, it falls on April 12.

This day is marked by the Sun’s exaltation in Aries and the Moon’s alignment with the star Chaitra in Libra, making it a powerful time for spiritual growth and reflection.

Chaitra Purnima is closely associated with Chitragupta, the divine scribe who records our good and bad deeds.

According to tradition, on this day, Chitragupta cleanses the soul of sins and helps devotees attain virtues for the afterlife.

It is a day for reflection on one’s actions, seeking forgiveness, and praying for the removal of past misdeeds.

Additionally, Chaitra Purnima coincides with Hanuman Jayanti, adding to its auspiciousness.

A prominent legend tied to this day involves Lord Indra. After disobeying his teacher Brihaspati, Indra faced a period of hardship.

Seeking redemption, he visited Madurai, where he discovered a Shiva Linga. Upon worshipping it, Indra experienced miraculous events, including the creation of Golden Lotuses by Lord Shiva, which cleansed him of his sins.

On Chaitra Purnima, devotees rise early for a sacred bath in holy rivers. They then worship Lord Vishnu and Lord Hanuman, often observing a ‘Satyanarayana’ fast.

Reciting the Satyanarayana Katha and offering sacred food to Lord Vishnu are part of the day’s rituals. In the evening, devotees offer Arghya to the Moon God as part of the prayers.

Charity is also a vital part of Chaitra Purnima. Devotees donate food, clothes, and money to those in need as part of the Anna Daan tradition. By performing these acts of kindness, one is believed to be absolved of their sins and granted blessings.

Chaitra Purnima is a time for spiritual renewal, charity, and seeking divine blessings for a prosperous life. It is a day of reflection, purification, and fulfilment of wishes.
