Ashadha Purnima is a sacred Hindu festival that celebrates knowledge, gratitude, and the timeless relationship between a guru and a disciple.

In 2026, Ashadha Purnima will be observed on Wednesday, July 29.

The festival is popularly known as Guru Purnima and is dedicated to honouring teachers, spiritual guides, and mentors who illuminate the path of wisdom.

The day also commemorates Maharishi Vedavyasa, revered as the Adi Guru, whose contributions shaped the foundation of Hindu scriptures and philosophy.

Maharishi Vedavyasa is credited with compiling the four Vedas, authoring the Mahabharata, composing the Brahma Sutras, and writing the 18 Puranas.

By organising Vedic knowledge into separate texts, he ensured that sacred teachings could be preserved and passed on to future generations. Therefore, Guru Purnima is also celebrated as Vyasa Purnima in his honour.

The festival carries deep spiritual significance as it marks the beginning of Chaturmas, a four-month period devoted to prayer, meditation, self-discipline, and spiritual practices.

According to Hindu tradition, this period encourages devotees to reduce worldly distractions and focus on inner growth and devotion.

Many also believe that the full moon of Ashadha creates an auspicious atmosphere for reflection and learning.

Devotees observe the day by waking early and taking a holy bath before offering prayers to Maharishi Vedavyasa and their gurus.

They decorate home altars, offer flowers, fruits, sandalwood paste, incense, and sweets, and recite devotional hymns such as the Guru Gita or Vyasa Stuti.

Many disciples perform Paduka Puja, worshipping the symbolic footwear of their guru as a mark of respect.

Charity, food donations, and serving those in need are also considered highly meritorious on this occasion.

Beyond religious rituals, Guru Purnima reminds people to express gratitude towards teachers who have guided their personal, academic, and spiritual journeys. The festival reinforces the importance of knowledge, humility, and lifelong learning.

By honouring the legacy of Maharishi Vedavyasa, Ashadha Purnima continues to inspire generations to value wisdom and preserve India’s rich spiritual heritage.
