Favorite flowers of various deities

Flowers are widely used for every ritual in Indian culture. It is not an exaggeration to say that religious events are not completed without offering flowers to the deities. They are auspicious and have their own significance. Flowers are offered to Gods and Goddesses.

However, you should remember certain things while offering flowers. Never pick up the flowers from the ground to offer them to the deities. Also, do not offer buds or withered flowers. Always offer fresh flowers. Do not wash flowers, but just sprinkle water to avoid withering.

Here are certain favourite flowers to various Gods and Goddesses:

  • Datura flower is the favourite of Lord Shiva. As per the Vamana Purana, Datura flower appeared from the chest of Lord Shiva when he drank the poison. Datura is offered to Lord Shiva to eliminate negative feelings like envy, hatred, ego etc. Crown flower is also offered to Lord Shiva during Shiv Puja.
  • Parijata of night-flowering jasmine is the favourite of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. This beautiful flower has a pleasant fragrance.
  • Lotus is the favourite flower of Goddess Lakshmi. Devotees believe that offering lotus flower to Goddess Lakshmi will please her. She will grant wealth and fortune in return.
  • Red Marigold flowers are favourite to Lord Ganesha. Hence, the flower is considered auspicious. That’s why marigold flowers are used to decorate homes at festivals and weddings.
  • Red hibiscus flower is the favourite flower of Goddess Kali. While the flower signifies the tongue of the goddess, the colour symbolizes her ferocity. That’s why hibiscus flowers are offered to Goddess Kali during Kali Pooja.
  • It is believed that jasmine is the favourite flower of Lord Hanuman. Hence, devotees offer jasmine along with vermilion to worship him.
