What should you eat during Navratri?

Navratri is a nine-day festival. As Navratri begins, many devotees observe fasting. This festival holds special importance in India.

There are many foods that should not be consumed in this festival. Some of them include some spices like turmeric and coriander powder, salt, garlic, onions, eggs, grains like rice, wheat, semolina and flours of these cereals, and non-vegetarian items. Even the consumption of alcohol is restricted in these nine days.

So, what should you eat in the festival of Navratri?

Dairy products such as milk, yoghurt, butter, paneer, cheese, malai, cream etc. can be consumed.


All nuts like peanuts, walnuts, almonds, cashews, raisins, walnuts, pistachios and pine nuts are taken during Navratri.

Spices like black pepper powder and cumin powder can be used. You can also use chilli powder and sendha namak instead of normal salt. Green cardamom is also permitted to use in recipes.

The use of regular flours is not permitted, hence flours like amaranth, buckwheat etc. can be used to make rotis instead of wheat flour or rice flour.

You should not use mustard oil in this festive season as the use of mustard seeds is not allowed. So, you can use vegetable oil, ghee or peanut oil to prepare curries and other varieties.

There is no restriction in using fruits. So, you can include as many fruits as you want such as bananas, apples, guavas, watermelon, papaya and pomegranate.

Also, there is no restriction of sugar usage.

Vegetables such as sweet potatoes, raw bananas, arbi, jimikand, bottle gourd and pumpkin can be used. So, make curries using these vegetables.

You can consume tea, yet consumption of coffee is not permitted.

Apart from these food items, you can also consume coconut water, almond milk, coconut pieces, makhaane and cashew milk.
