Ahmedabad to go completely digital
To avoid cash payments which remain a mode of COVID-19 transmission, Ahmedabad is planning to go completely digital from May 15.
As per this plan, no cash on delivery will be accepted. Those who opt for home delivery will have to pay digitally.
Ahmedabad is one of the badly affected cities with coronavirus in the country. It became the second-worst COVID-19 affected city after Mumbai. The new COVID-19 cases in Ahmedabad rose were 278 on Sunday alone.
Hence, the Gujarat government decided to avoid cash transactions in the city to prevent the risk of coronavirus.
It decided to go completely digital and avoid payments through currency notes.
Gujarat Additional Chief Secretary Rajiv Kumar Gupta passed an order on this. The order states that it has been made mandatory for all retail shops to accept digital payment rather than accepting cash payments through currency notes.
The order also states that all retail and home delivery agencies have been asked to completely screen their delivery staff.
The new order will come into effect from May 15 and all home delivery agencies will have to abide by the order and accept only digital payments.
There are around 17,000 retail shops that sell milk, groceries, vegetables and fruits in the city.
As per the order, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will form 100 teams to help these shops get online payment apps installed on their mobile phones. They will also promote digital payment through Unified Payment Interface (UPI) system.
In addition to that, these shops will also get technical support. These apps will help them go digital and avoid cash payments.
Some medical reports state that the novel coronavirus can survive on paper for many days. Hence, avoiding payments through currency notes is believed to prevent transmission.
All delivery staff will be provided with a health card which is valid for seven days. They will have to mandatorily download and use Aarogya Setu app on their mobiles.
