Railways to solve water shortage problems

In order to solve water shortage problems onboard trains, Indian Railways is mulling to have a new water filling system.

Currently, the water filling time is 20 minutes, but with the proposed system it will be five minutes which is going to solve water woes of the passengers who are onboard trains.

Indian Railways is going to launch a new water filling system from March, 2019 at more than 142 stations.

₹300 crore has been sanctioned by the Railways for this project.

Water in toilets and washbasins will be filled in the long-distance train for every 300-400 km so that sufficient water is available in the coaches as per the new system.

With this quick watering system, a train with 24 coaches can be filled with water in just five minutes. Furthermore, many trains can be filled with water at the same time.

In the past, four-inch pipes have been used to fill the water in coaches. Now, these pipes will be replaced with six-inch pipes with high power motors.

There is a plan to install pumps of 40 horsepower to improve the water pressure.

Hence, water would be filled more effectively than the past. With the computerized system named SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition), coaches will be supplied the water.

The old pipes did not have sufficient pressure, so they took nearly 20 minutes to fill the tank of an 1,800 litres capacity. As a result, water shortage used to occur.

As Railways is receiving many complaints on the lack of sufficient water in the coaches, the Ministry wants to replace the old system with the new proposed one.

The new system will take lesser time and as a result, there won’t be water shortage problems, says the officials.
