Railways to introduce OTP-based digital locking system
To prevent theft or loss of freight or parcel on board, Indian Railways is mulling introducing an OTP-based digital locking system.
As per sources, Railways will introduce a digital lock system soon for its freight. It will be opened and closed through an OTP. In this way, the cargo or parcels will be safer throughout the journey, as nobody can open them without the OTP.
Railway personnel will receive an OTP at both stations, i.e. loading and unloading stations. The concerned railway personnel will receive the OTP on their mobile number.
The loco pilot will press the lock button to confirm the location followed by entering the OTP to verify it after the arrival of the train at the destination. As soon as the verification is done, the loco pilot will receive another OTP on his mobile number to unlock the lock.
The system will also alert concerned railway personnel in the event of any tampering or collision of doors. So the officials can take the required action immediately.
In addition, the lock system also allows for tracking the train and recording the location. Hence, it will prevent theft or pilferage.
Thus, the digital lock system assures more safety and security of the goods on board. It will improve the safety and security of goods trains. As it enhances the security of goods on board, it will help improve freight revenue.
Currently, e-commerce companies are using the OTP-based lock system for their deliveries on trucks. These trucks will be equipped with a GPS-enabled smart lock for easy tracking of their location. Thus, the system helps prevent theft.
Now, the railways has also decided to use a similar system to help track packages and parcels on goods trains. So, many people can use the goods services of Railways without any fear.
