The new Railway budget for the next fiscal year has been presented by the Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu. The minister promised to address the issues related to all stakeholders. Here are some of the major highlights of the Railway Budget 2016-17.

  1. Travelling mothers will now get access to children’s menu, baby foods, and baby boards.
  2. The Railways is planning to start Rail Bandhu magazines.
  3. The lower berth quota for senior citizens has been increased by 50 percent by the Railways.
  4. Three new expresses have been introduced by the Railways. They are Humsafar, Tejas and Uday Expresses.
  5. Antyodaya has been introduced by Railways for the sake of unreserved passengers for long distance travel.
  6. It has been decided to add 2-4 Deen Dayalu coaches in long distance trains for unreserved travel.
  7. The world’s first bio-vacuum toilet is all set to launch at the Dilbrugarh Rajdhani Express.
  8. There will be a dedicated freight corridor for North-South, East-West and East Coast.
  9. In the year 2016-17, the railways will be transitioning into a complete paperless contract system.
  10. In this year, the railways is also planning to electrify 2,000 km of rail route.
  11. The outlay for having railway electrification is being increased by 50 percent.
  12. It is planned by railways to generate 9 crore man days in financial year 2017-18 and 14 crore man days in 2018-19.
  13. The government has backed the railways by giving a budgetary support of Rs. 40,000 crores.
  14. It has been planned by the railways to have 17,000 bio toilets at 475 railway stations by the end of the financial year.
  15. There will be an All India helpline for women which will run 24×7.
  16. The Railways is backing the Prime Minister. It is putting their complete effort to make the dream of Narendra Modi become reality.
  17. The Railways is planning to get an operation ratio of 92 percent.
  18. Rs. 8,720 crore has been saved from last year’s estimates.
  19. Railways has envisaged a capital expenditure of Rs. 1.21 lakh crore.
