New innovations for Indian railways
In order to keep up with the ‘Digital India’ campaign, Indian Railways is taking several steps to increase the comfort and experience for passengers. The ministry recently launched three IT initiatives as part of this. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu himself launched these initiatives.
The first is Paperless Unreserved Ticketing through Mobile Phone between New Delhi – Palwal Section. Users can now use an app to get a paperless unreserved ticket. The app, ‘utsonmobile’, can be downloaded both on Android and Windows-based platforms. Users can use the Railway wallet feature I the app to make payments. Unreserved tickets allow a passenger to travel but do not reserve a seat for them.
The second innovation is Currency Coin cum Card operated Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (CoTVM) at New Delhi Railway Station. These are unmanned self-operating kiosks. Using them, passengers can buy tickets using coins, currency notes and smart cards. For now, 450 machines are being installed by CRIS. The machines have simple GUIs for everyone to operate easily.
The third innovation is Parichaalan – Mobile Application for Freight Operations. This app is made for easy decision making on freight operations. It improves the management operation system. The app generates information which is dynamic. It also provides information in graphical format for easier understanding.
